Splat the Cat Finger Puppets

Love, Splat, by Rob Scotton, is my very favoritest kid Valentine book!  A rain cloud forms over Splat's head when things don't go right with his Valentine's Day plans, but Kitten saves the day! She finds his discarded Valentine anyway, and puts an umbrella over Splat!  We like you, too, Kitten!

I made Splat puppets by folding over a 6" piece of fuzzy black faux fur trim.  The arms, legs, and tail are double thick (glued together) pieces of black felt.  I hand sewed the tail on after sewing the body, legs, and arms with the machine. Ears and face pieces are glued on, with fabric paint details.

Happy Valentine's Day!

  1. These are adorable!! Thanks for the offer to send me one. I know my students will love to retell Splat stories with it. I will make sure to blog about it and give you a shout out so others find your great blog. I don't want to post my address here, would you mind emailing me at jenn@finallyinfirst.com?

    1. We need to get Kitten involved, with a little cocktail umbrella somehow... I know they make white trim, too!

  2. Oh My Goodness!! You are soooo creative! Do you sell these items? I just read Jenn's blog and had to see your site---WOW! is an understatement!! I teach TP (between K and 1st); every year the school has a science fair and we are a bit left out---but viewing your Easter section--I'd love to get them involved. How much money did you spend =appx.- where did you get the tubes, blow up hammers, etc. Your blog is truly inspirational--I can't wait to see the principal tomorrow!!

    1. Wow, thank you! I have sold a few but mostly it is fun to give them away. I make puppets for my kid's classes and always a few extra for giving away fun. The science party was a few years ago... the hammers were a clearance item from Oriental trading, about 50 cents a piece. The tubes came from Oriental Trading company too. They were $1 a piece.

  5. I just love your puppets. I teach first grade in Fairfax County Virginia. I use puppets to retell stories and poems. I have a number of students with different needs in my class. All of my students love the creativity that puppets bring to a story. Do you ever teach workshops or sell your puppets? Also, when sewing your puppets ( I don't sew too much) would use suggest clear thread so you don't have to change the bobbin too often. I have only ever made Halloween costumes before.
Thank you taking the time to share these ideas with others. The teachers and students in your children's classes are lucky to use such great puppets. Thank you for your inspiration! Beth raustzooo@gmail.com
